MARCH 23: In a criminal defamation case, a local court has sentenced Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi to two years in prison.
Gandhi was found guilty for remarks he made in 2019 at an electoral rally regarding the last name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He has been granted 30-day bail and has the right to appeal the decision.
Gandhi, a Congress party legislator, was present when the judge issued the directive.
Purnesh Modi, a politician for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in India, filed the complaint that served as the basis for the case.
