Rabi Lamichhane citizenship row: Court strikes down law and order, resigns as Home Minister

The Supreme Court has scrapped the status of Deputy Prime Minister Rabi Lamichhane.

A constitution bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Hari Krishna Karki delivered the verdict on Friday.

The verdict said that Lamichhane was not eligible to contest the election Lok Sabha Election because he did not take the initiative to obtain Nepalese citizenship after renouncing his US citizenship.

He submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal. Resigning as minister, Lamichhane said he accepts the court’s decision.

He said, ‘I have no answer for what I will do next.

Lamichhane, a former television personality Entered politics in 2022 general elections. they had formed Rashtriya Swatantra Party will contest elections,

He contested from Chitwan 2 and won. Before the election, a writ petition was filed against him claiming that he is not a Nepali citizen and asking the Election Commission to cancel his candidature.

The decision means that a by-election will be held in Chitwan 2 to fill the vacancy created by Lamichhane’s removal.

Following his removal as a lawmaker, Lamichhane will also no longer be the President of the National Swatantra Party. The party would however remain, even though Lamichhane had registered it using his illegal citizenship.
