KATHMANDU, March 7: In a recent ruling, the Supreme Court of Nepal declared Rabi Lamichhane’s citizenship illegal and removed his parliamentary seat.
Lamichhane, the chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra party and deputy prime minister and home minister, was accused by defenders Rabi Raj Basaula and Yubaraj Poudel of using Nepali and US citizenship and passport simultaneously, without relinquishing his Nepali citizenship.
The petitioners had demanded that Lamichhane’s membership in the House of Representatives (HoR) be removed.
The constitutional court, headed by Chief Justice Harikrishna Karki, ruled in favor of the petitioners, leading to the cancellation of Lamichhane’s parliamentary post. Lamichhane was elected to the Chitwan-2 HoR.
