Kathmandu, February 16
The mother of Nepalese Congresswoman Chandra Bhandari has died from burns sustained in a fire caused by a cooking gas leak.
Hari Kala Bhandari succumbed to injuries during treatment on Thursday morning at the Nepal Burn and Fissure Center at the Kirtipur Hospital premises, according to Dr. Nijina Tamrakar, deputy director of the hospital.
Lawmaker Bhandari is also badly injured and preparations are underway to take him to Mumbai, India for further treatment.
The two were injured in the accident at their residence in Kathmandu’s Buddhanagar on Wednesday night. Preliminary police investigation indicated that the two suffered burns after a cooking gas cylinder exploded. But a team that investigated the scene on Thursday morning said the fire was caused by a gas leak triggered by an electrical switch.
Both the stove and the cooking gas were intact, police officers reported.
