Initial reactions and observations
- Yes, Bayern Munich seems to have some problems. Most notable today was a toothless attack. What was going on up there? And only seven shots with two on target? Not so good.
- Julian Nagelsmann’s subs left a lot to be desired. Leaving Musiala was a strange decision, but for him not to bring in Thomas Müller either… it’s just unimaginable. Müller and Tell didn’t come on well after the 80th minute, at which point it was too late for them to make a game-changing impact. Poor game management from the Bayern boss.
- Yann Sommer’s distribution is lacking compared to Manuel Neuer and it is plain to see. Bayern will have to adjust to this.
- Can someone teach the wingers how to pass? Too many wasted crosses.
- It feels bad to start 2023 like this. Bayern now need to pick themselves up and do some introspection. PSG is not far away.

As always, we appreciate all your support!
82′ — Sub: Thomas Muller comes on for Serge Gnabry. Too late, all of it.
68′ — Sub: It makes no sense. Jamal Musiala came on for Kingsley Coman.
65′ – Dayot Upamecano is lucky to avoid a red card in what appears to be the last man challenge.
51′ – Goal. Hallstenberg took the lead in this. Kimmich made a big mistake in letting that happen.
45′ – The second half is underway!
Halftime review and analysis
- Neither team seems to be going full throttle yet, as they seem wary of each other. Bayern Munich are the better team so far, but the rust from the long break has shown.
- Dayot Upamecano has given Yann Sommer very little to do at the back. Apart from a few missed passes, the French were impressive at the back.
- Choupo-Moting makes it look easy. His goals feel as inevitable as Lewandowski’s at times.
- Without Mazaroui, Bayern have relied on Alphonso Davies to advance the ball.
- Sommer has only had one save so far, and it was a tame one. Is he disappointed or relieved?
interval: Bayern Munich lead 1-0
37′ – GOOOOOAL! Choupo-Moting makes it 1-0! First goal of the calendar year for Bayern!
29′ – Great finish by Goretzka! But it was offside. Or maybe it was a foul. Anyway, still 0-0.
20′ – No goals yet. Both teams seem to have fallen a lot.
Kickoff: We’re on the move!
40 minutes to start: We finally have the lineups! Julian Nagelsmann has dropped Thomas Muller from his first Bayern Munich starting XI of the year – a bold choice. A 4-2-3-1 formation with Choupo-Moting up, Musiala behind him and Sané and Gnabry on the wings. New signing Yann Sommer starts in goal.
45 minutes to kick-off: We don’t have a lineup yet. Is there a technical problem? This has literally never happened before. What is the Bundesliga doing?
Technical issues are currently preventing the lineups from being published. Everyone is waiting in the stadium too [@ransport]

After a longer than usual break, Bayern Munich Finally back in action against a Bundesliga team that is likely to challenge them for the title – RB Leipzig. Since the appointment of Marco Rose, the Lawn Bowlers have been climbing the table with solid performances that have actually mirrored what they looked like when Nagelsmann was in charge.
Bayern have had some big injuries in the game. Noussair Mazraoui, Manuel Neuer, Lucas Hernandez, and Sadio Mane will all miss the game for one reason or another. Meanwhile Leon Goretzka has a minor head problem so he is doubtful for the match. However, Koch has a new ace up his sleeve – Yann Sommer, recently signed from BMG. His debut will be a trial by fire against one of the Bundesliga’s best offenses.
It’s Bayern’s time.
