Priyanka Chopra Jonas A new cover story with British Vogue revealed what it was like to use a surrogate.
For reference, last January Priyanka and Nick Jonas Surprised a lot of people By announcing that they have welcomed a daughter named Malati. As British Vogue noted, the announcement sparked some backlash from people who speculated that Priyanka was “renting” the pregnancy and “outsourcing” her pregnancy for vanity reasons.
While Priyanka wanted to keep the details private, she told the publication, “I had medical complications. It was a necessary step, and I am very grateful that I was in a position to do it. Our surrogate was so generous, kind, sweet and funny, and she took care of this precious gift for us for six months.”
Addressing the negative feedback, he continued, “I’ve developed a strong hide when people talk about me.
“I know what it felt like to hold her little hands while they were trying to find her veins. So no, she’s not going to be a gossip,” she continued. “I’ve been really protective of this chapter of my life with my daughter. Because it’s not just about my life. It’s hers, too.”
In fact, Malati was born six months premature and spent three months in the NICU. “I was in the OR when she came out. She was smaller than my hand,” Priyanka said. “I saw what intensive care nurses do. They do God’s work. Nick and I were both standing there when they intubated her. I don’t know what they did to themselves. How to find what you need [in her tiny body] to intubate him”.
Finally, Priyanka had a clear message for people speculating as to why she decided to use a surrogate. “You don’t know me,” she said. “You don’t know what I’ve been through. And just because I don’t want to make up my medical history, or my daughter’s, the public doesn’t give it to you. Whatever the reasons are, you have the right to make amends.”
