Benjamin Mendy was found not guilty of seven of the nine charges against him.
The Manchester City defender has been acquitted of six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault following a trial that began in August 2022.
However, after 14 days of deliberations at Chester Crown Court, the jury was unable to decide on two other charges against Mendy – one count of rape, involving a 24-year-old woman in October 2020, and one count of attempted rape, one involving 29 year old female in October 2018.
Mendy will face a retrial in June on two charges — alleged rape and alleged attempted rape — that a jury was unable to decide.
Mendy’s co-accused Louis Saha Maturi was found not guilty of three charges. He faces a retrial in September on six more charges.
Both men denied the allegations and said all sexual activity was consensual.
Detective Chief Inspector Kate Tomlinson, of Cheshire Constabulary, said: “Following a full and thorough investigation into the allegations of rape and sexual assault against Mendy and Maturi, a file of evidence was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, who directed a prosecution to follow.
“Retrials will now take place for the remaining cases later this year and we continue to support witnesses in this case, and work with our colleagues in the Crown Prosecution Service.
“We are committed to investigating all allegations of rape and sexual assault – no matter how long ago they happened. If you are a victim of this type of crime, please don’t be a silent victim, come forward and we will listen to you. We will take action and we will We will provide necessary assistance.”
Mendy read the verdict against him with his head in his hands.
They were sent on Wednesday but could not report until the jury was finished considering the remaining two charges.
On Friday, the judge asked if the jury had more time to reach a verdict. However, Foreman replied: “No. We’re at the point where we can’t agree right now.”
Manchester City released a short statement “noting” the decision.
“As there are open matters relating to this matter, the club is not in a position to comment further at this time,” the statement said.
Manchester City suspended Mendy following his arrest in August 2021 and stopped paying him in September 2021.
His contract expires this summer.
