The situation has become tense after the death of a student studying in a school in Mirchaiya 3 of Siraha.
Srinja Kumari Mahara, a 16-year-old student of Sagarmatha Higher Secondary School, who fell ill after drinking ‘spirit’ while taking medicine while at school, died during treatment.
DSP Hari Bahadur Wali, Head of District Police Office, Mirchaiya informed that he died at Phulbari Memorial Hospital during treatment at 12 o’clock on Saturday night.
Angry students and parents ransacked the school after the death of the student. During the protest, the crowd blocked the east-west highway and raised slogans. Chief District Officer Lalbabu Kabari informed that three cells of tear gas and five rounds of aerial fire were fired to disperse the angry protestors.
Father Dharmendra Mahara said that the school teacher Ambika Lamsal’s daughter fell ill when she drank alcohol instead of water after she had a normal stomach ache last Friday. He said that the principal of the school, Pradeep Tiwari, took Srinja home without treating her, who fell ill after drinking the spirit, so she could not be treated in time.
“Principal Sir said that he got a vein because he drank a little spirit and that he would get better after sleeping for a while,” he said.
Two policemen in custody
The police have arrested Ambika Lamsal, the teacher who administered the medicine, and Pradeep Tiwari, the principal. Dharmendra, the father of the deceased, has lodged a complaint with the police demanding action against the accused. After filing a complaint, the police detained both of them for investigation.
DSP Wali said that an investigation is being conducted into the incident. “The school has also accepted the incident, the investigation is on as to how the situation of drinking spirit happened”, he said.
