China’s Xi to meet Putin in Moscow next week

KATHMANDU, March 17: The Kremlin said it would discuss a “comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation.”

The visit comes as Beijing, a Russian ally, has offered proposals to end the war in Ukraine, which have been met with a lukewarm reception by the West.

Western countries have warned Beijing not to supply weapons to Moscow.

Beijing’s foreign ministry said Xi would be in Russia from March 20 to 22 at Putin’s invitation.

Several “important bilateral documents” are expected to be signed.

The aim of the meeting is to deepen bilateral trust, a ministry spokesman said. ”

In February, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said he wanted to meet Xi Jinping to discuss Beijing’s proposal.

“I really want to believe that China will not supply Russia with weapons,” he said.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has previously said that Beijing is considering supplying Russia with arms and ammunition, a claim China denies.

US media reported on Friday that Xi will speak virtually with Zelensky after his visit to Russia, but this has yet to be confirmed.
