Ranj Pillai Premier of Canadian Province: Ranj Pillai is all set to become premier of a Canadian province after being unanimously elected as the leader of the Yukon Liberal Party. He will be the second Indo-Canadian on this post. Pillai was confirmed as the new leader of the ruling party on Sunday. He met with Yukon Commissioner Angelique Bernard on Monday to share his intention to serve as the territory’s 10th premier.
Ranj Pillai is expected to take oath as the chief minister’s equivalent within a week. Pillai will be the second Canadian province premier of Indian heritage after Ujjal Dosanjh, who held that position in the province of British Columbia between 2000 and 2001.
Family Roots in Kerala
Ranj Pillai is a Canadian resident of Indian origin. His family roots are in Kerala. He was born in the province of Nova Scotia, but has lived in the Yukon for a long time. He used to run his business. He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in November 2016 as the MLA for Porter Creek South, and was inducted into the cabinet as Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources and Economic Development. He is currently the Minister of Economic Development, Tourism and Culture.
Promise to protect the interests of the Yukon
Ranj Pillai will replace Sandy Silver, who has been in charge since 2012. Ranj Pillai said, “I am really honored to have got the opportunity to become the new leader of the party. During my upbringing, I was taught the value of public service and have spent most of my life in the service of the people. I am committed to working hard, acting strategically and defending the interests of the Yukon.
PM Trudeau congratulated
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in a statement issued by his office, congratulated Pillai on being elected leader of the Yukon Liberal Party and the next premier of Yukon. Ranj Pillai has been a big supporter of strengthening relations with India. In December, he met Sanjay Kumar Verma, India’s High Commissioner to Canada in Ottawa. During that time he had said that there are many opportunities for Yukon and India to work together.
